Here at the Homeschool Freedom Coalition, we’re often asked how we’re different from other homeschool advocacy groups.
It’s a fair question—and one we’re happy to answer. It helps bring clarity to how homeschool advocacy is changing and how each group fits in that picture.
Even though our approach is very different, we’re deeply grateful for the organizations that have helped pioneer and protect homeschooling over the years. Their faithfulness laid the groundwork for what many of us now enjoy.
A Look Back
In the early days of homeschooling, many parents faced real hostility for choosing to homeschool. My parents were the subject of a lawsuit to define the homeschooling law in our state. Back then, the battle was fought in the courtroom. Families risked everything to stand their ground. They bravely told the state that it had no business controlling how we raised and educated our children. Legal victories like Leeper v. Texas and Wisconsin v. Yoder didn’t just happen—they were the result of courage, prayer, and long legal fights.
Groups like the HSLDA played a critical role in those days. They were the ones who stepped in when homeschool families were being threatened, and we’re incredibly thankful for that legacy.
But we believe that the fight for homeschooling’s future has moved.
A New Battlefield
The greatest threats to homeschooling today usually aren’t coming from a courtroom. They’re coming from state legislatures—where bills get written, deals get made, and decisions are often finalized before the legislative session even begins.
And let’s be honest: if we wait to sound the alarm after the votes are already secured, we’re too late.
Take Texas, for example. After Governor Abbott won 11 key House races in November 2024, his poorly-worded school choice bill was already halfway passed before they had even gaveled in the legislative session in January. What followed was mostly political theater.
That’s why legislative work is very different from legal defense. It’s faster, more chaotic, and often determined by who shows up the earliest and speaks the loudest.
And that’s where our approach comes in.
We’re Focused on the Front End
Our mission at Homeschool Freedom Coalition is to prevent harmful laws from ever getting passed—not undo them later. We spend most of our time tracking legislation, exposing threats before they gain traction, and rallying families to take action while it still matters. We’re not here to play the long game—we’re here to change it.
While some groups prioritize building relationships with politicians in the Capitol, our priority is making sure homeschool families are heard loud and clear inside it.
We believe parents—not politicians—are the ones God has entrusted with their children. That means when we speak up, we do it boldly and respectfully, but without compromise.
We Don’t Just Want Access—We Want Political Accountability
Some organizations spend their time and effort trying to get “access” to political leaders, hoping it will lead to slow and steady change. They hope that by establishing friendships with legislators, they’ll do what we want during the legislative session.
In some rare cases, they just want a seat at the table, they want to be seen as one of the ‘in crowd’ and to know all the right people in power.
But access without accountability means that when the chips are down, the bad bills are moving or the good bill isn’t moving….the politicians don’t have to worry about what homeschoolers will do to them at election time.
We know that politicians respond to political pressure game, not to the various groups that have buttered them up and been friendly in an effort to have ‘access’ to them.
In simple terms, we know that the squeaky wheel gets the grease, and homeschoolers have been quiet, friendly, and kind for decades.
We don’t care to have access to them. We’re not trying to go out for dinner with them, we don’t care what church they go to, we don’t even care if they homeschool.
We care that they’ll fight like h*ll for our right to homeschool. Nothing else impresses us, because to us, nothing else matters.
To that end, we track votes, name names, and—when necessary—remind voters exactly what their elected officials stood for (or didn’t).
We love working with lawmakers who are truly on our side, and many of them are wonderful. But we don’t flatter anyone, because we expect fruit, not just friendship.
Real Power Lives at the Grassroots
We believe that the real strength of the homeschool movement has always been found in the hearts and homes of families—not the hallways of power.
That’s why we invest so much energy in keeping families like yours informed, encouraged, and ready to act. Whether it’s through text alerts, emails, mailers, videos, or in-person meetings, we want you to be equipped to protect your freedom and teach your children with confidence.
And yes—when politicians see that homeschool families are paying attention and speaking up, they usually get pretty uncomfortable.
But that’s a good thing. It means you’re being heard.
Primaries Matter
When bad bills pass, many groups throw up their hands and say, “Oh well, we’ll try again next year.”
Not us. We believe elections—especially primaries—are where the real choices are made. In conservative states, that’s often where the outcome is decided. So that’s where we show up strongest.
We use direct mail, ads, text messages, and personal outreach to support candidates who truly stand for homeschool freedom—and to call out those who don’t.
And no, we don’t apologize for it. Because if we’re not willing to stand firm when it’s hard, we’re not really standing at all.
We’re Engaged In General Elections, Too
We don’t sit out the general elections. Not when anti-family, anti-parent ideologies are trying to gain ground.
We go door-to-door (digitally and otherwise), sharing real information in ways families can actually use and understand. We help equip moms and dads to speak the truth in love—to their neighbors, their friends, and their legislators.
Whether it’s a primary fight or a general election, our message is consistent: Hands off our kids. Leave homeschooling alone.
Built to Last
We know this is a long road. And staying in the fight means being prepared—financially, spiritually, and emotionally.
That’s why we rely on small, faithful gifts from homeschooling families across the country. A $10 or $25 donation may not seem like much, but when thousands of families pitch in, it makes a huge impact. And we never take that trust lightly.
Some pro-family/conservative groups back down when the pressure comes. They soften their message, play nice, and call it a win when they get a politician to return their call.
We don’t. We don’t care about popularity or having our praises sung by politicians. We are here to protect children, empower parents, and honor God.
Why It All Matters
We know our kids are not the property of the state. They are precious souls, entrusted to us by God—and it’s our sacred duty to raise them in truth, wisdom, and freedom.
That’s why we won’t back down. Not now, not ever.
