What does this bill do?
📌 SB 6261 lowers the homeschool reporting age from 8 to 6.
Parents would be forced to file education plans for children who are not even required to be in school yet. That’s more paperwork, more risk, and more government intrusion into your home.
📌 This bill creates a state list of homeschoolers — even before compulsory school age.
Requiring declarations at ages 6 and 7 (whereas current law requires declarations at age 8) means the state would collect names and information on homeschool families years earlier than current law allows. Once the state has a list, it’s easier to expand tracking and regulation later.
📌 Homeschool families are being singled out and treated like suspects.
Families planning on public or private school don’t have to report early — only homeschoolers do. That’s just another way to single out homeschool families and put more unnecessary hurdles in front of parents who choose to homeschool.
Lawmakers must reject SB 6261 and respect parental rights.
Children should not be put on government lists — especially before they’re legally required to attend school. Families should not be punished for choosing a lawful education option.
Washington homeschoolers already deal with heavy reporting and regulation.
SB 6261 is one more step, one more encroachment, one more inch taken — when lawmakers should be rolling back bad laws, not adding new ones.
