I wish this were hypothetical. It’s not. And even if you don’t live in Ohio, you should hear about what’s going on there because it matters to parents all over the country.
Senate Bill 174 — a nasty attack on parental rights — has already passed the Ohio Senate and is now sitting in the Ohio House.
If it passes, judges in Ohio will have sweeping new power over the lives of children. This bill was written to codify how to handle custody cases — aka, when two people share a child and need to establish their care and custody.🚫
The trouble is that this bill replaces parents as the people who get to make final decisions about what is best for their kids — with Ohio judges.
Under SB 174:
- 👉🏽 A judge can override both parents, even when mom and dad completely agree on what’s best for their child.
- 👉🏽 A judge can decide that your child must attend government school — even if Mom and Dad agree they should be homeschooled!
- 👉🏽 This bill gives judges total discretion, even in cases without allegations of abuse, unfitness, neglect, or any CPS involvement.
For homeschool families, this is a direct hit.
SB 174 opens the door for a judge to say:
“I think public school is better,”
and order a homeschooled child into public school over the objections of both parents — even when homeschooling is working beautifully and both parents agree on it.
That’s not “shared parenting.” That’s government control. It invites activist judges to treat parents like a nuisance instead of the people who know and love their children best.
This is why Ohio is a battleground state. What happens there will spread. If they can weaken parental rights in Ohio, they’ll try it everywhere.
Right now, the Homeschool Freedom Coalition is going all–in:
- ❌ Targeted Facebook ads across Ohio
- ❌ Petitions and pre–written email tools to let people connect directly with their legislators!
- ❌ Statewide social media alerts
We’re mobilizing homeschoolers before this bill gains any more traction because we NEED to shut it down!
If you live in Ohio:
Please take 30 seconds to send a pre-written email directly to your representative urging them to vote NO on SB 174.
