Rough month? The schools are hiding something worse…

After nearly ten years working on the phone at one of the nation’s largest homeschool curriculum companies, I learned a truth about homeschooling: October can be one of the hardest months of the year.

For new homeschoolers, things might be going wonderfully….or they could be far more challenging than the parents were expecting.

For veteran homeschoolers, the “new” feeling has worn off the books, and the school routine is in full swing. Meanwhile, Christmas break still feels like a long way off to the kids — no matter how much they enjoy their schoolbooks!

So if you’re tired this month, I want you to hear this: you are doing the right thing for your kids.

And if you need a reminder of why, just look at the news out of Washington, D.C. this month.

On October 6, the U.S. Department of Education opened new investigations into how public schools handle staff sexual misconduct, part of a federal crackdown on what’s called “pass the trash.”

If you’ve never heard that phrase, here’s what it means: a school employee is accused of sexual misconduct with students, and instead of dealing with it, the district lets that person quietly move on… and teach somewhere else.

Two districts were named: New York City, and Jeffco Public Schools in Colorado, where several former employees have been convicted of sexually abusing students.

Districts in six more states are under investigation too: California, Georgia, North Carolina, Missouri, Texas and Virginia.

The Department’s own Assistant Secretary, Kimberly Richey, put it this way:

“We will always protect our children so parents should never have to wonder if their kids are safe at school.”

Parents should never have to wonder. But millions of them DO.

The same week, two Albemarle County, Virginia school administrators and a former principal were charged with failing to report suspected child abuse. And in Calera, Alabama, a teacher was arrested on child sexual abuse material charges, and deputies later found unauthorized photos of students in his possession.

Sure, right now these are just charges and investigations, not verdicts. But it keeps happening.

That’s the danger of “passing the trash”: the problem doesn’t get fixed. It just gets moved to another school, and another classroom full of kids.

When a school protects itself instead of your child, it has betrayed the very principles that justify its existence.

That’s why so many families are choosing to bring their kids home. And it’s why every hard day at your kitchen table is worth it.

You aren’t just teaching math and phonics. You’re giving your kids something the government system clearly can’t guarantee: a safe place to learn, with someone who loves them watching over them.

HFC is here to keep that freedom protected, so you can keep doing what’s best for your family.

P.S. If homeschooling is harder than you expected this October, you’re not alone. But please don’t give up…. because the schools are getting worse by the day.

This week, from D.C., we learned the U.S. Department of Education is cracking down on schools for “passing the trash” — moving staff accused of sexual misconduct to new schools, instead of exposing them. Your kids are home, and they’re safe, and you’re doing the right thing.

Big Ed would love for homeschoolers to get tired and give up. Let’s prove them wrong and finish October strong!
