They said it was about “safety.”
They said it was about “making sure kids were learning.”
But we saw through it—and we stopped it.
This year, politicians in Virginia and Illinois tried to sneak in massive government overreach into state law that would have been disastrous for homeschooling.
The bills, HB 2827 in Illinois and SB 1031 in Virginia both tried to pass new restrictions and regulations on homeschooling families.
Overall, it was pretty bland language, lots of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo, but the effect would have been devastating.
- Mandatory reporting on homeschool families.
- Federal “learning standards” tied to state assessments.
- Data collection with no parental consent.
And they almost got away with it.
But that’s why we exist, and we were not going to let homeschooling get trampled. We know that homeschoolers would not stand by, either. Angry homeschooling parents are a political force that these radical legislators weren’t counting on.
So we here at the Homeschool Freedom Coalition immediately launched digital ads, mobilizing tens of thousands of homeschoolers about the threats in both states. We created action links which allowed parents to email their legislators directly – and those loud voices were heard!
We exposed the agenda, and with those links – helped people to directly contact their legislators and hound them with calls and emails, and just like we knew they would, homeschoolers rose up and flexed their political muscle, and the bills got pulled.
But this is just the beginning.

💥 The Department of Education is laying the groundwork for “voluntary” federal homeschool standards.
💥 And every time we win a battle, they regroup behind closed doors.
