James Dobson’s Legacy & Why Homeschoolers Must Rise Now

As you’ve likely heard by now, Dr. James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, went home to be with the Lord this week at the age of 89.

We think it’s worth stopping to reflect for a moment on the homeschooling movement and the impact Dr. Dobson had on it.

Through Focus on the Family and later Family Talk, he encouraged millions of parents — including the parents of several of us here at HFC — to take responsibility for raising and discipling their children. Many of us can remember listening to his voice on the radio, giving courage to weary moms, and reminding dads to lead their homes.

But towards the end of his life, Dobson also saw something more. He realized that if families were going to protect their freedoms — including the freedom to homeschool — we couldn’t stop at encouragement and discipleship.

We had to be effective in the civic arena. That’s why he made the bold move of stepping beyond the limits of a 501(c)(3) and launching efforts like Focus on the Family Action and even a political PAC, so parents could speak freely and boldly about legislators. So we could influence elections and not just stand on the sidelines.

After decades of ‘educating’ people, he had realized that the battle wasn’t only in the classroom, it was at the ballot box.

And that’s exactly what the Homeschool Freedom Coalition exists to do.

That’s why HFC is building a civic engagement arm, a place where homeschoolers can come together, get organized, and have real impact in shaping laws and leaders who affect our children’s future.

For too long, politicians have assumed we’d stay on the sidelines.

🚫 That we would just be sweet and quiet, trusting them to do what we sent them to the Capitol to do.

🚫 That we would send our kids to help door knock for them during the campaign season or put out signs in our front yard.

🚫 Maybe show up at the Capitol one day a year where they glad hand everyone and send us on our merry way.

That’s over.

Dobson saw the problem and began to pivot accordingly so that homeschoolers weren’t taken advantage of anymore.

And that’s the same vision HFC is carrying forward today. We’re committed to helping homeschool families stay strong in their homes and strong in their civic voice. Because if we lose our voice in the public square, we risk losing the very freedom that allows us to homeschool in the first place.

You, the voter, need to know which politicians are voting for which bills, you need to know who is funding these far leftist politicians, and you need to know the private deals being made at our expense.

We exist for that very reason.

Now that homeschoolers number in the millions, everyone and their brother will be trying to regulate it.

With the passage of ‘School Choice’ laws all over the country, there are now billions of dollars of state and federal money in the mix, so the risk of future regulations has exponentially increased.

And HFC will be standing in the gap every step of the way, emboldening homeschoolers and fighting for you, our members.

So today, Dr. Dobson’s passing is a sobering reminder: the torch is in our hands now. He ran his race faithfully. Now it’s our turn to rise up, speak boldly, and make sure homeschoolers are a political force to be reckoned with in this generation.

For freedom,
