Parents Sentenced to Prison for Homeschooling Their Children

A husband and wife in Brazil have just been sentenced to 50 days in prison because they chose to homeschool their daughters.

If that sounds unbelievable, I thought so too.

According to reports, the family pulled their daughters out of the government school system during COVID and began educating them at home.

Report: Brazilian parents sentenced to prison for homeschooling

They weren’t hiding their children or refusing to educate them. In fact, they reportedly submitted more than 3,000 pages of records showing the girls were receiving a quality education.

An independent educational psychologist found no evidence of neglect, and even the government prosecutors recommended the parents be acquitted.

The judge convicted them anyway.

Part of the court’s criticism centered on the fact that the girls had not been taught government-preferred subjects involving gender ideology, sexual education, and “diversity.”

The court even pointed to the family’s emphasis on religious and classical music instead of popular Brazilian music as evidence that something was wrong.

The parents are appealing the ruling, and their prison sentence has been suspended while that appeal moves forward. But regardless of how the appeal turns out, this case should serve as a wake-up call to every homeschool family in America.

Because this isn’t really about one family in Brazil.

It’s about a mindset that says government — not parents — should have the final say over how children are raised and educated.

Unfortunately, that mindset isn’t confined to Brazil.

Over the last five years, homeschooling has exploded across America.

Millions of parents watched what was happening in government schools during COVID and decided they’d had enough. They saw declining academic standards, far-left INSANITY in the classroom, and bureaucrat “activists” making decisions that should have belonged to parents.

So they brought their children home. That should have been celebrated!

Instead, it put a target on the backs of homeschool families.

Big Education isn’t just losing students. It’s losing funding, influence over our kids, and control of their futures.

And when that happens, politicians who are closely tied to teachers’ unions and education bureaucracies start looking for ways to regain that control.

Sometimes it’s mandatory reporting.

Sometimes it’s registration requirements.

Sometimes it’s curriculum mandates or testing requirements.

Sometimes it’s legislation that gives government officials more authority to monitor homeschool families. Frankly, we’ve seen all of these things happen time and time again.

The details vary from state to state, but the direction is always the same: more government oversight and less parental freedom.

That’s exactly why the Homeschool Freedom Coalition exists.

Unlike a lot of political organizations, HFC isn’t run by career lobbyists or policy experts who just saw “homeschool politics” as a chance at a career move.

Our team was 100% homeschooled, and we’ve spent our adult lives fighting political battles in state legislatures across the country.

We understand that these freedoms don’t survive simply because they’re the right thing to do.

They survive because somebody is willing to organize politically, expose anti-homeschool politicians, and make them pay a price at election time.

That’s what HFC does every single day.

>>>HELP DEFEND HOMESCHOOL FREEDOM<<<

Summer is vacation season for most families. Kids are playing outside, families are taking trips, and people are trying to enjoy a slower pace of life.

But that’s not what politicians are doing.

While most Americans are on vacation, legislators, lobbyists, and advocacy groups are meeting behind closed doors, drafting legislation, preparing bill language, and laying the groundwork for the next attack on your freedoms.

By the time those bills are introduced, the planning has already been going on for months.

That’s why HFC doesn’t shut down for the summer.

We’re tracking legislation, working with lawmakers, exposing politicians who want to regulate homeschool families, and preparing to mobilize thousands of families the moment these attacks begin.

That work takes resources.

So today I’m asking you to help us continue defending homeschool freedom by making the most generous donation you can.

>>>HELP DEFEND HOMESCHOOL FREEDOM<<<

Whether it’s $25, $50, $100, or more, every dollar helps us stay in this fight and make sure America never follows the path we’re now seeing in places like Brazil.
