80% of NY homeschoolers “chronically absent”? Did she ever ask WHY?

You have to read this one twice to believe it.

Times Union report on Sen. Patricia Fahy and homeschool absence data

New York Sen. Patricia Fahy is pushing data claiming more than 80% of homeschoolers are “chronically absent.” Then she posted this:

“If kids aren’t in school, they’re not learning, and if they’re chronically absent, we are failing that child.”

Now she’s filed two bills to give districts “new tools to track attendance, home instruction, and identify troubling indicators.”

First of all, the data says that kids that are IN the schools are the ones who aren’t learning, but that’s not the point of this email.

We’re far more concerned about this type of legislation gaining ground than just pointing out their hypocrisy. Let’s think about what students classify as “chronically absent” before they start homeschooling.

>> The kid getting bullied every single day.
>> The medically complex kid in and out of hospitals.
>> The kid whose teacher made school a nightmare.
>> The kid who got assaulted in the bathrooms.

Their parents kept them home to PROTECT them and when the school wouldn’t fix the problem – – they pulled them out for good.

Of course those kids have high absences. Missing school is often WHY families leave.

And under Fahy’s bill, and others like them gaining ground across the country, those absences become a red flag against YOU.

Under S. 10715:

❌ If your child missed 20% of school days before you started homeschooling, the district would have to review your home-instruction plan within 60 days.

❌ If you’re just under a child-protective investigation, the district WOULD NOT approve homeschooling at all.

Not a conviction. Just an investigation.

So to summarize; your child is bullied. You keep them home. The school sees the absences and calls CPS. And while that investigation is open, the state will keep your child in the exact school that was hurting them.

There are already laws for people who abuse children. Prosecute the crime!

But an accusation is not proof, a sick child is not neglect and choosing to educate your child at home is NOT suspicious.

HFC is getting the word out to Homeschoolers about this bill and similar legislation that is spreading across the country but we need your help to do it!

Big Ed wants to crush our homeschool freedoms and homeschoolers need to get loud going into 2027.

So please donate now and if you know any homeschoolers who live in New York State, please share this with them!
