Big news is breaking out of Alabama this week — and while it’s a massive victory for thousands of families, it serves as a sobering warning for the homeschooling community.
State officials just confirmed during a board of education work session that Alabama public schools have seen an enrollment drop of 12,000 students!
And earlier this year, Alabama received a record 13,425 homeschool applications for its CHOOSE Act education savings accounts!
Let’s be clear: that’s FANTASTIC. Thousands of kids are getting out of a system that’s failing them and we love that for them and their families!
But think about what kinds of families are leaving…
It’s the parents who show up. The ones who are very engaged in what is going on with their kids.
They’re the parents who were helping with homework every night, and arguing with administrators about the nonsense their kids were being taught.
For years, these parents have been propping up a failing system for free. And now they’re DONE.
Good for them! But a system that was already collapsing just lost the very people holding it up — and it’s going to show.
But the government education system won’t blame itself. Of course not.
Here’s what it WILL do. Every student who leaves takes funding with them. Money is power for Big Ed, and 12,000 students walking out the door is a lot of money.
The more families choose homeschooling, the more regulation Big Ed will try to push onto homeschoolers.
We’ve seen the playbook in other states:
❌ New reporting and “accountability” rules for homeschool families.
❌ Reviews and approvals that turn parents into suspects.
❌ Hoops designed to make leaving harder for the next family.
Every one of them is sold as “protecting kids”……but what they are really protecting is the funding.
That’s why HFC watches statehouses across the country going into 2027, so we can sound the alarm the moment one of these bills appears.
Big Ed is going to come after homeschoolers in the next session, and lawmakers need to hear from us FIRST.

Big Education wants its funding back. They’ve noticed the exodus, and you can bet they’ll lobby for new legislation to reel homeschoolers back into their system.
